Who is Faust?

Faust is a character pertaining to classic German legend. A very successful scholar, Faust is dissatisfied with life and so makes a deal with the devil in which he exchanges his soul for unlimited worldly pleasures and knowledge. Many literary, cinematic, musical, and artistic works have taken Faust’s tale as their basis. The adjective ‘faustian’ has come to describe an arrangement in which an ambitious person surrenders their moral integrity in order to achieve greater success and power, the “deal with the devil”.

In the early books, Faust is irrevocably damned for choosing human over divine knowledge, “he laid the Holy Scriptures behind the door and under the bench, refused to be called doctor of Theology, but preferred to be styled doctor of Medicine”. However, as time progressed, Faust was understood in greater complexity, especially after his treatment in Christopher Marlowe’s play, ‘The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus”. 200 years later, Goethe created Faust into a dissatisfied intellectual who desires “more than earthly meat and drink”.
